Hvad er VO₂ max?

Don't worry – we'll explain it here!

What is VO₂ max?

VO₂ max stands for maximal oxygen uptake, and it is a measure of how much oxygen your body can take in and use during strenuous physical activity. It is measured in ml of oxygen per minute per kg of body weight (ml/min/kg).

The higher your VO₂ max, the better your body is at transporting and using oxygen – and the better you perform, especially in endurance sports like running, cycling and swimming.

Why is VO₂ max important?

A high VO₂ max means:

Better endurance and performance

Faster recovery

Increased risk of cardiovascular disease

Overall better fitness and health

Even if you're not a competitive athlete, VO₂ max is a strong indicator of your overall health

Can I improve my VO₂ max?

Yes! And that's good news

Here are some of the most effective ways:

Interval training (HIIT) : Short, intense periods of high heart rate

Long-distance training : Calm, longer rides increase aerobic capacity

Strengthen your core and breathing : Better breathing = better oxygen uptake

Eat and sleep properly : The body must be able to recover

How do you measure it?

You can have your VO₂ max measured at a testing center (often with a mask and treadmill), but many modern sports watches and apps can give a pretty good estimate based on your heart rate and activity.

Pro tip: Use VO₂ max as a guideline – not a definitive answer. Your progress and well-being matter more than a number.
