#35 Fueling in 2025: How to optimize your energy

#35 Fueling i 2025: Sådan optimerer du din energi

In this episode, we delve into the essence of fueling and its crucial role in endurance sports. We start with the basics: What is fueling, and how do macronutrients like carbohydrates, fat, and creatine play a role in energy production in the body? We explore how our bodies store energy as glucose and fat, and how the aerobic and anaerobic systems work together to create ATP – the body’s primary energy source.

We discuss why proper fueling is essential for performance. From the critical moments when glycogen stores are depleted, to how the body is forced to burn fat and can hit “the wall.” We touch on the theory behind glycogen stores in muscles and liver, why ketogenic diets and fasting don’t work during intensive training, and how ineffective fueling can impair muscle function.

From cultural changes to practical strategies: We take a closer look at how the understanding of the need for energy intake has changed among athletes – from professional cyclists like Michael Valgren and Mattias Skjelmose to new research on timing and quality. What role does the ratio of different sugar types like glucose and fructose play for absorption and performance? We also explain how slow carbs like isomaltulose and galactose can provide stable energy production and better fat burning during longer events.

Research and future opportunities
Drawing on Thien's knowledge and current research at Aarhus University Hospital, we also take a look at the latest research in fueling, including Professor Gareth Wallis' work on sugar metabolism and incorporation into the liver and muscle. We discuss the future of individualized nutrition based on body size and intensity, as well as the potential of new products of sugars in combination with protein, ketones and lactate for optimal recovery and performance.

Listen in and gain a deeper understanding of why proper fueling is a game changer for your training and competition, and how you can implement the best strategies in your own training!
