For many athletes, the off-season is a time when there is more room to relax and focus on other aspects of their training than intense competition preparation. But that doesn’t mean you can put everything on hold – the foundation for the upcoming season is being laid here. Athletes who structure their off-season well and use the time to strengthen weaknesses and build their aerobic capacity are often the ones who perform best when competition calls again.
We discuss how the off-season can be used to mentally slow down and experiment with new training methods like strength training and cross-training, or by focusing on aspects that usually get less attention. It's also about prioritizing training volume over intensity and finding the right balance in the intensity distribution.
A high volume of training also requires the right nutrition, and we explain why it's crucial to optimize this part - especially as the weather gets colder and wetter. It's also important to remember that recovery doesn't happen automatically; small efforts make a difference over time.
Finally, we look at the mental challenges of facing darker months, and how to keep motivation up and ensure the best conditions to get the most out of your training.
