We all know the feeling of that first workout in the heat. It feels insanely hard, even if we try to keep the intensity down. Increased heat in itself is not a good thing and is caused by our bodies being too inefficient at converting energy into movement.
Heat training has therefore become increasingly popular in recent years because it can prepare our bodies to handle the hot conditions in which we often compete. But what exactly happens in the body when exposed to heat?
We review all the physiological adaptations:
-
Increase in plasma volume
-
Increased sweat rate
-
Increased heat buffer capacity
We discuss heat training protocols and how to best acclimatize. Finally, we try to weigh the pros and cons of implementing heat training for all of us who are not professional athletes. Because is it even worth it?
